Our Mission
Grassroots Groundwork mission is to improve how the Lansing community responds to mental health crises and to expand access to client-centered, sustainable mental health recovery through education, advocacy, and peer support.
Our organization has a multi-pronged approach to addressing issues with local crisis response and making mental health recovery possible for more people.

- Barriers both small and larger prevent the most basic of healing
- Person-centered, sustainable recovery is often stifled by misguided response to crisis, unresolved crisis, and provider-directed care
Founder
Frances Kanous
Serving Lansing, MI residents since 2015,
Frances has gone from a person living with a mental illness to a Peer Support Specialist & Community Health Worker, to a community advocate.
She has worked at our local Community Mental Health serving people with mental illnesses so severe that their level of care included several visits per week. There, she learned recovery from unfathomable mental demons is possible. She has worked for an SUD recovery organization, serving people across the entire state who are battling addiction, helping them to decide their own unique path to sustainable recovery. She has worked for a Catholic organization helping pregnant people navigate recovery from Opioid Use Disorder. And she has worked for mental health crisis lines.
She has presented at conferences on ways to help clients achieve truly self-directed, individualized recovery. And has gone on to earn several state certifications to deliver high quality support services in multiple capacities.
Although the work has changed over the years, the goal has always been the same: make recovery a possibility for everyone.
